To become a gym instructor or group exercise instructor the minimum qualification you need is a Certificate III in Fitness. Once you are Cert III qualified, you can work in gyms and health and fitness centres.
Our most popular choice of course enrolment is the combined Certificate III and Certificate IV in Fitness courses. This is the best choice for people wanting to enter the fitness industry for the first time.
*Additional Specialisations (optional):
After you have gained your Certificate III in Fitness you can then upgrade to a Personal Trainer or Fitness Specialist and increase your chances of landing your dream career in the fitness industry!
The Onfit Training College course combines 24 competencies clustered into 6 subjects, which must be completed as well as a First Aid and CPR qualification to form a complete Certificate III qualification. First Aid is NOT delivered in the online course format and must be completed elsewhere if students do not hold this qualification already. Onfit do provide regular First Aid courses or alternatively an outside provider may be used.
The first subject of the course is Exercise Science which includes information on anatomy and physiology - in particular how the body moves, both in terms of joint structure, planes of movement, origins and insertions of muscles, and energy production. This subject also investigates the basic physiology of the biological systems and their interdependence.
Collectively this forms the basis of understanding of how the body will respond to exercise and what results will be produced from different forms of exercise. All other subjects from within the course build from this foundation of knowledge.
The subject of Nutrition is covered in a basic format with respect given to the limitations fitness professionals have in offering nutritional advice. An understanding of macronutrients and the role each of these plays in energy production is a focus. Topics such as hydration are also covered as they play important roles in health and exercise outcomes.
The unit on Gym Instruction revisits the understanding of anatomy and physiology gained earlier, but is now applied to effective specific exercise selection and how to create programs for a range of client goals. Health screening and fitness testing are encompassed in this, as is the teaching of correct technique.
To compliment gym instruction, and to equip gym instructors with the skills to deal with the needs of today’s clientele, the course examines what is classified as an awareness of Special Populations. In this subject, an understanding of common conditions such as asthma, diabetes, and high blood pressure is gained, and the effects exercise can have on clients who experience these conditions.
The course also aims to prepare graduates for teaching exercise to groups in the subject Recreational Programming. It addresses group leadership as well as the planning of single sessions and a series of sessions (programs) for a group - whether it be in a gym setting or an outdoor setting. Topics such as risk management are encompassed in this.
Finally the course addresses General Workplace Skills needed by everybody joining the work force. Topics such as workers’ rights, clients’ rights, OH & S and client services are explored and developed in this unit.
